# 1080p webcam test

_Check whether your camera actually delivers 1920 by 1080. Cameras sold as Full HD frequently upscale from a smaller sensor, and the readout above shows what is really being sent._

## What counts as a real 1080p camera

A genuine 1080p webcam has a sensor that captures 1920 by 1080 pixels and sends them without enlargement. An upscaling camera captures fewer, then stretches the image in firmware so the output is technically 1080p while carrying no extra detail.

Both report 1920 by 1080 in the readout above, because both really do send that many pixels. Distinguishing them takes a visual check.

## How to tell the difference

1. **Start the test** and confirm the resolution reads 1920 × 1080. If it does not, the camera is not sending Full HD at all, and nothing further is needed.
2. **Hold printed text up to the lens** at around 30 centimetres. On a true 1080p sensor small text stays legible with clean edges. Upscaled images show soft, smeared letters.
3. **Look at fine patterns.** Fabric weave, hair and textured surfaces are where upscaling fails most visibly, turning detail into mush.
4. **Check the frame rate** at 1080p. A genuine sensor usually manages 30. A budget camera claiming 1080p at 60 is very likely interpolating.
5. **Test in good light.** Poor lighting degrades any image and will mask the comparison entirely.

**1080p is the practical ceiling for calls.** Zoom, Teams and Meet transmit around 720p in most conditions and drop lower on weak connections. A genuine 1080p camera still helps, because the extra detail survives downscaling better than an upscaled image does, but 4K adds nothing to a call.

## Why so many cameras exaggerate

Sensor cost rises sharply with resolution, while the marketing value of the number does not. Upscaling in firmware costs nothing and lets a cheaper sensor carry a Full HD label. It is technically defensible, since the output really is 1920 by 1080, which is why the practice persists.

Interpolated still-image megapixel counts work the same way. A camera advertising 12 megapixel stills alongside 1080p video is almost certainly interpolating, since the two figures are inconsistent with a single sensor.

## What actually improves your video

In order of impact: lighting, camera position, background, then resolution.
