Our current position
At the time of writing, this site carries no advertising, no affiliate links and no sponsored content. Nothing on it is paid placement. If that changes, this page will be updated first and the disclosure will appear on the affected pages, not only here.
We publish this policy in advance because a disclosure written after the money arrives is worth very little.
How recommendations are made
Our guides sometimes name specific software, such as OBS Studio for flipping a webcam image, or suggest a category of purchase, such as a desk lamp to improve video quality.
These are chosen on merit alone. We are not paid to mention any product, and no company has any input into what we write. Where free software solves a problem, we recommend the free software.
Our general position is that most webcam problems are solved by better lighting rather than better hardware, which is not a recommendation that benefits anyone commercially. We would rather be useful than monetisable.
Affiliate links
We currently use none. If we introduce them, we commit to the following:
- Affiliate links will be clearly marked at the point of the link, not buried in a footer.
- The page carrying them will include a visible disclosure near the top.
- A commission will never determine whether or how we recommend something.
- We will not add affiliate links to existing recommendations retroactively without reviewing whether the recommendation still stands on its own.
- Free and open source options will continue to be recommended where they are genuinely the better answer.
An affiliate link means we may receive a small commission if you buy something after following it, at no additional cost to you.
Advertising
The site currently carries no advertising. If display advertising is ever introduced, adverts will be visually distinct from editorial content and clearly labelled.
Advertisers would have no influence over editorial content, and no advertiser would be permitted to review or approve a guide before publication.
Note that advertising networks typically set tracking cookies. Introducing them would require changes to our cookie policy and, in many jurisdictions, a consent mechanism. We would publish that before it happened, not after.
Sponsored content
We publish none. Were we ever to accept it, sponsored articles would be labelled as such in the title and at the top of the page, and would never be presented as independent editorial.
We do not accept payment for links inside existing articles, which is a common request and a practice we consider plainly deceptive.
Editorial independence
No company has any control over what appears here. We have no commercial relationship with Zoom, Microsoft, Google, Apple, Discord or any other organisation named in our guides. See the trademark and affiliation notice.
Where a product is genuinely poor, we say so. Our resolution guide states plainly that many webcams advertised as 1080p upscale from smaller sensors, which is not a claim manufacturers enjoy seeing published.
How we do not fund the site
Worth stating explicitly given what this site does. We do not fund it by:
- Selling or sharing personal data. See the privacy policy.
- Recording, storing or analysing your camera or microphone streams. This is structurally impossible here, not merely prohibited.
- Building advertising profiles or fingerprinting visitors.
A free tool that asks for camera access has an obvious way to make money dishonestly. We do not take it, and the site is built so that we could not without rewriting it.
