Advertised resolution is frequently fiction
Webcam marketing is unusually dishonest. A camera sold as 1080p may have a sensor that captures far less and upscales in firmware, producing a stream that is technically 1920 by 1080 but carries no more real detail than 720p. Interpolated megapixel counts are the same trick.
The readout above shows the resolution your browser negotiated with the camera. It is the honest number in the sense that it is what applications receive, though it still cannot tell you how much genuine detail is in those pixels.

Your call resolution is lower than this test. Zoom, Teams and Meet transmit around 720p at best and drop lower under bandwidth pressure. A 4K camera does not produce a 4K call. What a better camera actually gives you on a call is a cleaner, less noisy image at the resolution being sent.
How to spot upscaling
Compare detail at different distances. Hold printed text up to the camera and look at how the letters render. A genuine 1080p sensor keeps edges crisp; an upscaled image looks soft and smeared no matter how good the lighting. Fine patterns like fabric weave are another good test, since upscaling turns them to mush.
Frame rate is a useful clue too. Many cameras that do capture a true 1080p image can only do so at 30 frames per second, while a camera claiming 1080p at 60 in a budget price bracket is almost certainly interpolating something.
Why lighting matters more than resolution
If you are choosing between a higher resolution camera and better lighting, take the lighting. The frame rate test shows the effect in a number you can watch change. Video compression discards detail from noisy dark images aggressively, so a well-lit 720p image reliably looks better on a call than a poorly lit 1080p one.
