Windows 10 has three camera permissions
Open Settings, Privacy, Camera. There are three separate controls, and all three must be on:
- Allow access to the camera on this device — the master switch, controlled by an Change button near the top
- Allow apps to access your camera — covers Microsoft Store apps
- Allow desktop apps to access your camera — right at the bottom, below a long list of app names
The third one governs Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Zoom and Teams, since all of them are desktop applications. It is the setting people most often miss, because it sits below a list long enough to push it off the screen.
The built-in Camera app
Windows 10 includes a Camera app, which is useful as a second opinion. If the camera fails in both, the not detected guide narrows it down further. Press the Start button, type Camera, and open it. If the camera works there but not in your browser, the problem is a browser permission. If it fails in both, the problem is the driver, the device or a system privacy setting.
Resetting the driver
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Cameras, or Imaging devices on older machines.
- Right-click your webcam, choose Disable device, confirm, then enable it again.
- Retest. This clears a stuck driver state without needing a restart.
If that does not help, open the device's Properties, go to the Driver tab, and choose Uninstall device. Restart, and Windows will reinstall a working driver automatically on boot. This is safe: Windows carries generic UVC drivers that work with almost every webcam.
Windows 10 reached end of support in October 2025. It still works, but it no longer receives security updates by default. If a camera problem started after a manufacturer driver update, rolling the driver back is often the fastest fix, since new drivers are increasingly targeted at Windows 11.
Laptop specifics
Many laptops have a camera key on the function row, usually F8 or F10, that disables the camera at firmware level. Windows cannot see this, so the camera simply vanishes with no error. Press it, with Fn if required.
Business laptops from Lenovo, Dell and HP often ship with their own camera privacy utility that adds another layer on top of Windows. If the camera is missing from Device Manager entirely, check for a vendor utility in the system tray.
Other tests
Once your camera is working, the microphone test and speaker test use the same permission model and are worth running before a call. The keyboard and mouse tests need no permission at all.

Not for that reason alone. Windows 10 camera problems are almost always permissions, drivers or another app holding the device, and all three are fixable in place.
