Two different WhatsApp desktop products
This trips people up constantly, so it is worth being clear.
- WhatsApp Web runs at web.whatsapp.com in your browser. Camera permission is granted per site, the same way it is granted to this page.
- WhatsApp Desktop is a separate installed application. It needs its own operating system camera permission, granted separately from your browser.
Video calling support has historically been better in the desktop app than in the browser version. If calls are unavailable or unreliable in the browser, installing the desktop app is usually the fix.
Granting permission in the browser
- Open web.whatsapp.com and click the camera or lock icon at the left of the address bar.
- Set Camera and Microphone to Allow.
- Reload the page. The permission does not apply until you do.
- If no icon appears, permission was denied earlier. Clear the site from your browser's camera settings and reload.
Your phone must stay connected. WhatsApp on a computer is linked to your phone account. Depending on your version and settings, calls may require the phone to be online, so a phone that is off or out of signal can break desktop calling even when the camera is perfect.
Permission for the desktop app
On Windows: Settings, Privacy & security, Camera, then enable both the app entry and Let desktop apps access your camera.
On macOS: System Settings, Privacy & Security, Camera, tick WhatsApp, then quit and reopen the app.
